Jakarta, GIVnews.com – Jakartans may these coming days see queues of luxury car owners visiting the capital’s tax offices to pay car ownership levies. The Jakarta city administration recently declared harsh moves against luxury car tax evaders.

Currently, there are 1,293 luxury cars whose owners have not paid luxury car taxes by the end of 2017. This is according to Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, as reported by Detik.com last Saturday (13/1).

The governor, who took office last October, will also reportedly announce the names of owners of luxury cars who failed to follow the city authorities’ repeated calls that they soon pay their taxes. Allegedly, luxury car tax evaders included celebrities, lawyers, businessmen, and government officials. A luxury car would have a sale value of more than Rp 1 billion.

In fact, Jakarta authorities including tax officials and the city police had since the middle of last year reminded citizens owning luxury cars to pay their taxes if they had not done it. As a follow-up, tax and police personnel began in August 2017 to search the homes of several showbiz artists who, according to tax office records, had not paid their luxury car taxes.

Celebrities were the tax office’s first targets because their case would quickly get blown up by the media, according to city officials. Presenter Raffi Ahmad, soap opera star Anjasmara and comedian Tukul Arwana were among those reported in the list. Raffi Ahmad reportedly have several luxury vehicles under his name including brand names like Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce and Ducati.

Other celebrities on tax officials’ lists included Ahmad Dhani, Bella Sophie, Gading Marten, and Deddy Corbuzier. Meanwhile, Hotma Sitompul and Hotman Paris Hutapea were reported to be among those top lawyers who still have to pay their luxury car taxes.
